Why should I be ashamed that I’ve dealt with depression, anxiety disorder, and PTSD? Why should anyone? The prescribing of antidepressants by PCPs allows people to go without a solid diagnosis, and perpetuates the stigma. Our brain chemistry or the complex and sometimes traumatic situations we find ourselves in, are value neutral. Until we start thinking of mental health as just another part of our health, with preventative care along with appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocols to help us be as healthy as we can be, we’re shouldering the burden of shame that has nothing to do with us.
Taking care of ourselves when it comes to mental health, is a responsible act. Sometimes we need help getting to the help we need, and that is a caring act. There is no reason to be ashamed of needing that help, taking that responsibility, and choosing to work towards a healthy psyche/brain.
Ever.
