Attacks on abortion rights in the UK →
tumbleflakes:
Over the past few months I’ve been horrified by the attacks on the rights of women to have control over their own bodies in the US. I’m so busy worrying about the US that I miss attacks on our own rights here in the UK.
Seriously? Looks like there’s nowhere on the planet where women are considered to be full citizens, capable of making their own decisions about medical care...

<3 @amandapalmer for being the girl at the @duranduran show, that I’d have been if I’d been there.
Reblogging because even at local shows, with local bands, there are always people who are, to borrow a phrase from Good Omens, REALLY COOL PEOPLE, and they do this *thing* that is like being in hell, for me. They stand there, and sip their PBRs or microbrews, or cocktails, and they...

Random things: The world, theatre, media, and...
Life is often a matter of avoiding the undertow and trying to catch the crest of the wave, and sometimes failing.
The world is a strange place, and it seems like the pace of upheaval has become incessant.
There’s always another battle. There’s never enough breathing room to regroup and think strategically, instead of tactically.
Revolutions are happening, people are dying, there...
MN GOP bill will prevent teens from accessing... →
MN GOP’s bill, SF 1017, moves Minnesota from a ‘parental notification’ state to a ‘parental consent’ state - meaning that for a minor to obtain an abortion, they must obtain permission from their parents. There is an exception for incest, though only when raped by a relative nearer than a first cousin by blood and the victim would be forced to go in front of a judge and prove that incest...
There's no excuse for violence... →
tumbleflakes:
One of the St John Ambulance volunteers from London’s protests on Saturday echoes my thoughts: it doesn’t matter who you are, it doesn’t matter if you are aiming at police, violence against anyone is not okay no matter what.
Colleagues of mine, protesters, were there when the violence started, right next to people setting off fireworks. Fortunately they weren’t in that cramped...

Let it be known that I do not like Hair and Makeup. I have nothing against them as individual entities. Quite the opposite in fact; I like having hair. Not only does it offer protection from the cold and the searing heat- it provides a sanctuary into which I can retreat should I happen to…
Reblog because this sums up so very neatly how I feel about the entire...

What's really driving the GOP's abortion war →
Really interesting analysis about the use of women’s bodies as cannon fodder in a political, rather than truly idelogical war. They want to beat democrats, this is a way to do it. I hate politics, even as I’m intrinsically enmeshed in it.
How we communicate no and how it's heard →
tumbleflakes:
This article quotes a number of pieces of research that show that we don’t like saying no, but say alternatives, and we understand when these alternatives mean no. Rape isn’t a case of miscommunication but willful ignoring of the answer.
This is brilliant. And it defenestrates much of the classic tactic of seizing on purely the wording of refusals, to determine whether a rape...

– Stephen Hawking - “Into The Universe” (via cosmosweednlife)
I love this show. For the science, for Professor Hawking, whom I have a hardcore science-fangirl crush on, and for the narration, which is… *ahem* good. It’s good.

The Zeitgeist of Sucker Punch: Part 1 - Sight...
Since the first images debuted at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, I’ve been intrigued by Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch. I liked the aesthetic, I liked the idea of hot women being badass in an eye-candy epic. What I didn’t anticipate, was the way that the film would be received, sight unseen.
themarysue.com posted an op-ed that amounts to an exhortation to boycott SP, on the...

Okay, Chicago. It should be relatively easy for us to get out there and put up our own signs. No graffiti, of course, but I’m sure we could hang a banner on a tree or something. LET’S DO THIS.
Here’s the board:

Five Fun Facts About the $14 Trillion National Debt
janedoe225:
In one sense, for better or worse, our growing public debt has put trillions into the pockets of the American people. There’s an economic principle known as “Wagner’s law,” which holds that as a country gets wealthier, its tax burden tends to increase. Wagner’s law makes perfect sense: in a poor country,...

hola my dear comrades, one and all. thank you all for the beautiful and smart comments (and retweeting) of the last blog. struck a chord? yes…. it’s been a crazy week. i’m home but untethered, plenty to do, millions of tasks but very few priorities. my sign fell down: we’ve all been drinking a lot. sometimes that happens around here when the calendar says spring and the sky...
